How to Make (and Keep!) Your New Year’s Resolutions for 2022
January 18, 2022
With January in full swing, there’s no time like the present to start focusing on those resolutions you made for the new year. But for many of us, it can be difficult to get started. Maybe you have a resolution in mind but aren’t sure where to begin. Or perhaps you haven’t had a chance yet to really think about what, exactly, you’d like to accomplish in the new year. Here are a few ways to make—and keep!—your resolutions for 2022.
Aim lower. Sometimes, the loftiness of a goal can make it seem out of reach, thereby tempering your motivation. In these cases, it’s better to break your resolution down into smaller, more manageable goals. For example, instead of resolving to lose 20 pounds, make it a goal to lose five pounds instead. Once you reach your “mini” goal, you’ll be more inclined to press on with your journey. Remember: It’s a marathon, not a sprint!
Start small. Did you make a resolution to, for example, run a 10K or save $1,000? Keep in mind that both goals start the same way: with a single step or penny saved. By simply taking a walk around the neighborhood or setting up a piggy bank, you’ll be actively working toward your resolution!
Make it fun. If your resolution isn’t a good fit for your lifestyle or interests, it’ll be very difficult to see it through. If you’re a creative type, consider signing up for an art class to learn a new skill. If you’re a fitness enthusiast, enroll in a new-to-you exercise program like yoga or dance cardio. Just make sure that the classes are a good fit for your schedule!
Phone a friend. Some goals are best achieved through a buddy system. Ask some friends if they’d like to join you in your resolutions, whether it’s to be more active, eat healthier, or learn a new hobby. Having a friend will help keep you accountable and provide you with the motivation you need to succeed—not to mention help make the process much more fun!
