As service members and veterans of the Armed Forces (and their families), you’re already aware of the significance of Veteran’s Day—but do you know anything about its history? 

Observed annually on November 11, this federal holiday dates back to November 11, 1919. That was when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as “Armistice Day,” a day to commemorate the conclusion of World War 1, which had ended one year prior. Fast-forward to 1954, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name of the holiday to “Veterans Day” to further solidify the day’s purpose: to honor and remember the sacrifices of U.S. veterans, both living and no longer with us.

There are many ways to celebrate Veterans Day, such as visiting a veterans’ hospital, sending care packages to deployed troops, or supporting veteran-owned businesses. Of course, veterans themselves can join in on the celebration by taking advantage of Veterans Day discounts!
